Starbucks Frapp-Happy Hour is Back

That’s right, as we move into warmer weather, it is time to transition into colder coffee drinks. Starbucks is here to help with that transition by offering HALF OFF ANY FRAPPUCCINO from May 3-12, during the hours of 3-5pm.

With this promotion also come two seasonal frappuccinos- the returning favorite, mocha cookie crumble frapp (yum!) and the new caramel ribbon crunch frapp.

Coffee and Toronto

If you have a chance, take a trip to Toronto, Canada. What a neat city that is. I had the most wonderful time walking everywhere, checking out neighborhoods with many different personalities and sampling local foods. And of course I had to stop by some of the local coffee shops, both independent and commercial.

Happy Belated New Year!

Hello all and Happy New Year!

Please excuse my tardiness on the well wishes, I have been busy travelling. This has resulted in a massive back up of email, pictures to upload and Google Reader posts to browse through. As I scrolled through my GR I came across a post on a sorority sister’s blog (if you like proper southern things, give her a visit at Carolina Fireflies). For the past two years she has thrown this question out to her readers, ‘how do you measure a year?’ Then she posts all of the milestones from the past year. I think that this is an excellent idea, so in the true spirit of ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’, I am responding to her with how I measure my 2012.

Last year was a fantastic year, every single moment, good or not-so-good, I’m so thankful for all of it. I learned so much, yet I still have so much to learn and explore. And most of all, as I learn from the past, I cannot wait to see what this year holds!

My 2012 was measured by:

1 job resignation

1 new job

1 proposal

1 sparkly ring

1 engagement trip to Savannah

15 work events, planned and executed

27,000 dollars raised for one work event

2 gala board positions

2 non-profit board positions

1 trip to Nashville

1 trip to Charlotte

1 trip to Toronto

1 weekend worked at a comic convention

3 weddings attended

2 baby nieces born

2 plays attended at the Fox Theater

1 new car

1 trip to Minnesota and Iowa

1 hike to the top of Grandfather Mountain

2 trips to South Carolina

4 trips to Florida (2 to the beach)

1 new home

2 charity bike ride

lots of kitten cuddling

many date night adventures

many, many wonderful days and nights spent with friends and family

more love and happiness than I could have imagined possible!

Coffee, Chocolate, Beer

I am not a beer girl. I just never was into it…all beer tasted like beer to me and I was happy to continue that way of thinking, well, forever. Then I met my fiance. Honestly, I’m still not at beer girl but you know what? But now I am enlightened and there are some darn delicious beers out there. For the most part, in my esteemed (haha yea right) opinion, those beers are heavy, dark stouts with flavors of coffee and chocolate floating around with the hops.

So I have compiled a list for you of my favorite coffee and chocolate brews.

Mo’s Picks- Chocolate and Coffee Stouts

(1) Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti- Great Divide Brewing

Old friend. I first discovered this beer in a little bar in Tallahassee called the Fermentation Lounge. They are the masters at finding fantastic and unique craft beers (usually in very limited supply) with even more unique names to go with them. I had one taste and then traveled back home and it wasn’t until weeks later that i was able to find a bottle of this delightfully thick and chocolaty beer. Then? Well it’s season ended and I had to wait a whole 9 months for stores to start stocking it again. What to do? Hoard beer people. It is the only way to keep you sane in between the seasons of your favorite beers.

Note: In my diligent research for this post, I discovered that there is an Espresso Oak Aged Yeti….this shall be my new quest.

(2) Mokah Blended Stout AND (3) Choklat Stout- Southern Tier Brewing Company

If you have never had a beer from Southern Tier…RUN, ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun. Don’t walk. No way.

Get to your nearest well-stocked beer vendor and look for Mokah, Choklat, Creme Brulee or Pumking. I know what you beer snobs are thinking…Eeeeeeewwwwww, it’s another lame-o flavored beer, yuck. Well you are wrong. I don’t know how they do it but these beers are the real thing. We had the Choklat the other night and OMG it was like drinking that crazy sipping chocolate stuff with a SIDE of beer and bubbles. Perfection. The Mokah? Oh yes, just like the Choklat but it’s like this…you know how when you go to Starbucks and order a mocha latte and there is always WAYYYY too much chocolate sauce so you have to order an extra shot of espresso to even things out to the perfect chocolate to coffee ratio. Well it tastes like that…but with stout. Do it. Tonight. Thank me later.

(4) Wake ‘n’ Bake Coffee Oatmeal Stout- Terrapin Beer Company

Loyal readers…do you remember my epic quest to find this beer? In March I bought a can of the Jittery Joe’s coffee used to brew this beer and it was satisfyingly rich, dark and clearly the perfect ingredient to be used in a beer. Two local Atlanta companies combining forces to create a beer of wonderment? Well, that might be a little strongly worded, but now you should be able to tell how I felt when my fiance found this beer for me recently. After MONTHS and many stores visited, we had found it. And boy was it worth the wait. What is that you say? Ohhhh, you want to actually know how it tastes, I see. Well, let me put it like this…it is like the thickest glass of Guinness you have ever tasted BUT THEN they took a shot (or two) of dark, strong brewed quality coffee and dumped it into your beer. It’s like a kick in the pants that is good with a nice chocolaty dessert.

In conclusion, what does this have to do with coffee? Well, as you will notice in the previous paragraphs, I strategically interwove the word ‘coffee’ into random sentences in order to discuss my love of coffee and chocolate stouts without judgement. So no judging, ok?

FREE Coffee at RaceTrac

This may just be a regional thing, but oh well. If you are in the South and you have a local Race Trac gas station, you should pay them a visit this week.
I know they cannot be lumped into the fancy coffee category but, hey…their coffee is cheap and tasty. Sometimes when I’m out running errands and I am near a Race Trac, and I dont’ want to spend a fortune on caffeine, I’ll stop by one of their stations for come latte-machine-goodness.

They offer both regular brewed coffee and those pre-mixed latte dispensers in many flavors. They also have flavor syrups, flavored creamers and toppings galore (Woooooo mini marshmallows for the win!). Oh and all of those add-ons are FREE (take that Starbucks).

So on to the FREE COFFEE part…

This week, Sunday 12/16 – Saturday 12/22….go to your local RaceTrac for a free cup of coffee. Any size, just the way you like it.

I know it isn’t exactly the height of pretentious coffee consumption but hey, it’s warm, caffeinated and free. Could you ask for more?
